What is SA-BLASTonGT?
SA-BLASTonGT software provides maximum efficiency of NCBI BLAST program based on the GreenTea which is one of the most advanced grid computing platform.

What is BLAST?
BLAST, the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool, is a software package that is used by biologist for rapid searching of nucleotide or protein databases. BLAST is a sophisticated tool that has become the most important piece of software in the field of bioinformatics.

BLAST is a set of similarity search programs designed to explore all of the available sequence databases regardless of whether the query is protein or DNA. The BLAST programs have been designed for speed, with a minimal sacrifice of sensitivity to distant sequence relationships. The scores assigned in a BLAST search have a well-defined statistical interpretation, making real matches easier to distinguish from random background hits. BLAST uses a heuristic algorithm that seeks local as opposed to global alignments and is therefore able to detect relationships among sequences that share only isolated regions of similarity....

What is Grid Computing?
The word "grid" is an analogy to the electric power grid, where we get electricity via wall socket from the collective generators in the power grid. Like the power grid, we can get enormous computing power from the collective computers on the network.
Also, it is a kind of virtualization of computing power. We are able to use many computers on the network as a one computer.
Because of the global spread of the internet, there exists a collective amount of computing power which is idle much of the time and can be used if the infrastructure supported grid computing. This could have magnitude impact on scientific and enterprise computing.

What is GreenTea?
The GreenTea (GT) Platform is a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) based generic runtime "Grid" operating system platform that facilitates the P2P distributed network computing services by harnessing the existing idle computing resources on the network. GT is written entirely in the Java (TM) programming language. It runs on any Java-enabled computing platforms, such as PCs, Unix, Linux, Mac OS X, even Java-enabled Cell phones, etc. GT enables organizations to fully utilize their existing heterogeneous computing resources to meet their heavy-duty computing needs without buying expensive supercomputers and servers. This means that any computers in the organization can contribute to the supercomputing by using GT.

GreenTea provides a simple, manageable, lightweight platform with the following advantages:
  • True edge to edge pervasive resource sharing
  • Server-less architecture
  • Fully cross-platform
  • Bi-directional/N-way resource sharing
  • Small footprint extendable to thin/wireless devices
  • Built-in redundancy
  • Granular security
